These photos from the series “The Bastard Chairs of China” by Michael Wolf and published as a book “Sitting in China” in 2002 brings us to the backyards of China. The creativity and mix of odd and recuperated materials of these chairs is simply fascinating and inspiring. I just read an article about an German architect who was celebrated to bring unusual materials into her work. Well, these people do it on a everyday basis and because they have no choice, I guess. And that’s why I feel that the photos highlight too much the aethetic, fancy aspect about these chairs. I’d love to see the sourroundings of these chairs, see them in use and be able to discover who uses them. But seemingly that was simply not the purpose of these images.
